The tournament is among the oldest tennis tournaments in the world when it was established as an international tournament in 1948 through a collaboration between Båstad Malens Tennissällskap (BMTS) and the Swedish Tennis Association (SvTF).
Since then, the tournament has been arranged every year in an unbroken sequence except for 2020 when the competition was stopped due to the Covid outbreak.
The ATP Competition has won the prestigious ATP Tournament of the Year award no less than 13(!) times.
