On the hottest day of the tournament, the first final commenced between French pair Manuel Guinard/Gregoire Jacq and the Brazilian 3-seed pair of Orlando Luz/Rafael Matos. In their first meeting, the Brazilian duo beat the French pair 7-5 6-4 in 1 hour 30 minutes.
Guinard/Jacq were looking to add to their 5-1 tour-level run in their ATP Tour debut here in Båstad, where they were also yet to drop a set. Today however, they lost their lead and with that a tightly contested first set 5-7.
In the second set, Luz/Matos aimed to add to their tour level win rate of 3-1. He along with Luz has won all their matches in straight sets (W/O. Nadal/Ruud in semi-finals). They broke early in the second to put themselves in a commanding position to serve out the set and win 6-4.
This is the 3rd year in a row for Matos in the Båstad finals. During his on-court winner’s speech, Matos was full of praise for Båstad, complementing the tour by saying, “This is really the best 250 on tour. It’s perfect. Nothing (needs) to change!”
