The heat was on, literally and figuratively. In the singles’ final lasting 1 hour and 27 minutes, Nuno Borges won his debut ATP Tour title beating Spain’s Rafael Nadal 6-3 6-2.
Fresh off his emotional semi-final victory yesterday, Nuno Borges looked to reach a career high of No. 42 with this win. Starting strong by converting 3/6 break points off of Nadal’s serve, Borges won the first set 6-3.
Nadal, seeking to win his second Båstad title after winning his first in 2005, opened serve in the second set. However, a determined Borges took only 1 hour and 26 minutes to bring himself to the position to serve for the match, closing it with an ace.
A very emotional and introspective Borges warmly thanked the crowd in his post-match winner’s speech, “Crowd was so respectful, even though they all wanted Rafa to win.” He continued to praise the tournament organisation. “I’m loving Båstad, first time in Sweden. Undefeated.”
Nuno Borges now becomes only the second Portuguese ATP Tour champion after J.Sousa and second Portuguese finalist in Båstad’s history after J.Sousa in 2014 (l. to Cuevas). A fine end to a young Portuguese’s week here in the Swedish summer.
