Skatov stuns Griekspoor

Skatov stuns Griekspoor

The second match on Day 4 was played between the 3rd seed Tallon Griekspoor and tournament qualifier Timofey Skatov in which Skatov won 1-6 6-3 6-4.

Griekspoor broke in the first game of the first set to put himself in a commanding position in just 9 minutes to go up 3-0. The young Kazakh was afforded only one game before Griekspoor closed the set 6-1. The world No.27 is making his Båstad debut. He aims to be the 1st Dutch Båstad quarter finalist since de Bakker in 2013.

At the start of the second set, it was Skatov who drew first blood on Griekspoor’s unforced error. The Dutchman seemed to lose his focus a bit with some wayward errors on regulation smashes and volleys. Skatov seemed to lock in and considerably upped his game. The Kazakh clinched the set 6-3 to take the match into a decider. Timofey Skatov, a former world No. 1 in juniors, is seeking his first quarter final win on the ATP Tour.

The deciding set was on serve till the fifth game where Skatov broke Griekspoor leading to the Dutch getting a code violation for racket abuse. The outburst seemed to work as Griekspoor broke right back. The match was perfectly balanced at 30-30 4-4 when Griekspoor hit one into the net, followed by a double fault giving the Kazakh a vital break to serve the match out with an ace in 2 hours 9 minutes.

Timofey Skatov will now play the winner of the all-Portuguese encounter between Henrique Rocha and Nuno Borges later today.
