The second round of the WTA tournament in Båstad delivered drama right from the first match on Center Court. Defending champion Martina Trevisan faced in-form Polish player Katarzyna Kawa—and it turned out to be an unexpectedly early exit for the Italian titleholder.

Kawa, who had already impressed in the first round by defeating the fourth-seeded Spaniard Nuria Párrizas Díaz in three sets (7–6, 0–6, 6–3), continued her strong performance. She started the match aggressively and took control from the outset. Trevisan struggled to find her rhythm and lost the first set 6–2. Despite showing signs of a comeback in the second set, the Italian was unable to shift the momentum, and Kawa closed out the match with a 6–3 win.

Kawa, showing increasingly strong form at this year’s tournament, now advances to the quarterfinals—just as she did last year, when she fell to American Ann Li. With a WTA 250 final appearance in Zürich earlier this year, she is proving she has the ability to go even further.

In the quarterfinals, Kawa will face seventh-seeded Hungarian Dalma Gálfi, who advanced after a solid win over Spain’s Leyre Romero Gormaz (6–0, 3–6, 6–2).

Egypt’s Mayar Sherif also booked her place in the quarterfinals after defeating Varvara Lepchenko in straight sets, 6–1, 6–4. Earlier in the tournament, Sherif eliminated Sweden’s Kajsa Rinaldo Persson and now looks to be in excellent shape heading into the next stage.
