Elisabetta Cocciaretto is the new champion of the Nordea Open, as she comfortably defeated Katarzyna Kawa in the final with a straight-sets victory, 6-3, 6-4. This marks her first title at the tournament and the fourth WTA 125 title of her career. The trophy remains in Italian hands following Martina Trevisan’s win last year.
The match unfolded smoothly for the world No. 116, who remained in control throughout and never looked truly threatened by her opponent. She started strong with an early break and quickly extended her lead to 3-0 after a second consecutive break. Even when Kawa managed to break back at 3-0, Cocciaretto stayed composed, responded with another crucial break for 5-2, and made it clear that the opening set was hers to claim. The Polish player struggled to find effective shots and responses to Cocciaretto’s consistent play, especially under pressure, winning only 27% (4/15) of points on her second serve. Despite a double fault from Cocciaretto that gifted Kawa a love game for 5-3, the Italian stayed solid and closed the set at 6-3 with confident defensive play.
In the second set, Cocciaretto remained fully focused on her game plan, chasing down every ball and maintaining a strong serve up to 5-4. In the 10th game, she held her nerve and showed great determination to finish the match with a break, which she secured after reaching double match point on Kawa’s serve. Notably, Cocciaretto was dominant behind her serve in the second set, winning two consecutive love games and posting a 70% first-serve percentage, compared to 55% from her opponent.
With 6 aces in total and winning 86% (6/7) of points on her second serve, Cocciaretto—seeded No. 8 in the draw—joins the long list of Nordea Open champions alongside major names in world tennis. She further solidified her reputation as one of the most consistent Italian players on clay courts.
Speaking on court after the match, the 24-year-old from Ancona shared that she feels at home in Båstad. She also highlighted that her exciting week at Wimbledon, which included a win over world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, found the perfect follow-up with this title victory in Sweden.
